Statuario Extra

The close-up view of each stone type shows a relatively true image of the crystalline structure and the colouring. This is suitable for grained slabs to a limited extend only. In regard to the colour matching, please take an original sample of the stone from your furniture store as a basis.

Petrography

A soft rock, lightly ivory-coloured, generous veins of graphite and serpentine – a marble of the extra class. The most famous is probably Carrara marble, from which Michelangelo made his statues. Marble is crystalline lime, interspersed with limonite veins, also graphite veins occur; one of the oldest working materials of mankind and at the same time one of the noblest.

Petrogenesis

Statuario, as marble, is metamorphite. The Apuan marble mountain range in the region of Carrara-Massa-Pietrasanta was generated within the earth crust at increased pressure and high temperatures by re-crystallisation of limestone with organic contents. These could have been animal or plant remnants. Mono-mineral calcite marble was generated from the limestone. Fine-leaves graphite was formed from the organic inclusions over the millions of years, which formed the grey veins in the form of linear concentrations. The statuario deposits are not on the surface, but have to be mined in high tunnels under ground.
